The lure of the open road. The siren call of far-away lands. The seductive cry of the friendly skies. The chance to see new places, meet new people, experience different cultures. Or to just get the hell outa Dodge for awhile. Travel has always been a driving force in my life. As a magazine editor and photographer, it has also been a big part of my job for the past 20 years. That all changed in 2020. Global pandemics, we’re discovering, have a way of doing that. Which led to this project, which I’m calling “I Remember Travel.” As a reflection of the times, I’m envisioning this as a virtual, web-based platform to share stories, photos and music inspired by my pre-pandemic travels. Some that have been previously published, some that will be public for the first time. The plan is to post something every couple weeks or so throughout 2021, and I’m looking forward to looking back at these tales from the road and the memories they drum up. Let me conclude this introductory post by offering up a virtual toast to the end of a tumultuous year and, hopefully, a new day rising in '21. The beat goes on... ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Born in a small Wisconsin blue-collar town, Mike Starling ditched the assembly line for a long, sometimes circuitous career working with words, sound and images. His original music is heard on numerous recordings and soundtracks, and his stories and photos have been featured in books, films, mags and other media.
